Crop Update from ACS Field Agronomist, Colton DeBower
Mon, 13 May 2013 00:00:00 GMT
May 13th and we are finally getting the planting ball rolling. Looking at the latest USDA report Nebraska is 14 percent planted. At this time last year we were 85 percent and normally we are about 60 percent done. We can not let this rush us to the field, wet soils and planting do not get along well, planting when it is too wet causes sidewall compaction. Weather this week looks to be favorable and most guys are in the field. As we get busy don't forget to be safe especially with wide equipment on the roads.

ACS Specialist, Jason Kock, Shares What's Going on in His World
Mon, 13 May 2013 00:00:00 GMT
Spring may finally be upon us and with that, it is always great to get planters rolling in the fields. This year is totally opposite of last year. I am guessing if you have been farming long enough, you have probably saw about every weather scenario possible. The rain has been welcome and has helped build the soil profile so the crop has a good start. The wet conditions will be a challenge with starting too soon and having sidewall smear and compaction issues. If you have down force monitoring on your planter make sure to keep an eye on it and run a minimal amount of down force but still maintain a good ride.
