Carl’s Comments: The Perfect Storm

If there is one thing we know for certain is in our business, there are no two years that will ever be the same.  It could be weather, markets, changing business climate, or all the above.

I cannot remember a planting season that has caused me more concern than this year. There have been lots of sleepless nights worrying about how we are going to meet the expectations of our owners in the most compressed planting window that I can remember.  That, coupled with an inverse grain market causing more grain to be marketed later in the year, and an energy supply picture that seems to always have us on the verge of running short on supply.  It felt like a perfect storm.

I am proud to report to you that even with all these concerns, we had one of the most successful spring seasons ever. We will set another record for the amount of fertilizer delivered to our owners and I am very confident that even with a much smaller burn down season, we will also exceed the amount of custom application acres. While this was going on, we moved a record amount of grain and our energy division had the foresight to get tanks filled in advance of outage concerns.

There is only one way that all of this was possible; Great People.  I could go on and on about their effort, resourcefulness, willingness  to bring new ideas and technology, and to drive change.  I believe that we have the most committed, talented and resourceful employee group anywhere.  In the end, I am just going to say that I am extremely proud of how they have stepped up to help our owners be more successful.

Please take the opportunity to thank those that serve you.
