It’s not hard to find depressing news about the Ag economy out there, as a matter of fact it is all around us. I sat through a presentation last week that was not all full of roses for the outlook of our industry. Where others find insurmountable challenges, leaders see vast opportunities. Now is the time that you and your Trusted Advisor must forage your relationship in fire, this is the time you must challenge us for our very best every day. We need to communicate about the important things. The things that are going to trigger decisions, how we are going to implement technology and information to increase your profitability through the right decisions at the right time.
We need to work better as a team and take an intense look at your individual situation, field by field, acre by acre. We can decide where we can be more efficient and more decisive; not where we can cut expenses. Always keeping in sight what is important to you bottom line, not the maximum yield, but rather an optimum yield. This will help us reallocate your resources more precisely and with greater purpose, matching our inputs to our potential. All along keeping a target profitability as the ultimate goal, not just for your entire farm but for each and every acre you farm.
This isn’t going to be easy. This is an advanced level of agronomics and advisorship than we have needed the past seven years. We need to leverage all of the tools and programs that we will have over the coming years to help you thrive not just survive through all sorts of extremes. We will have to be more aggressive when it counts as it pertains to what matters to YOU. WE are going to have to ask you the right questions to know what you want us to keep our eyes on for you. Is it just fertilizer price relative to grain prices? Is it managing your crop protection dollar better? Maybe trying to find a way to save you any trip across the field? My hope is that you challenge us to all of these things at the same time, not just managing an individual decision, but rather delivering you integrated solutions that are innovative and make sense.
Times today are different, and not all of us (producers and advisors) have been through this, but a good number of us have. Now is the time for us to test our trust and relationships, and it will not always be easy. Finding those opportunities is going to take a new level of planning and commitment, not just a single plan but scenario planning that takes in account all the foreseeable twists and turns your operation may face. Now is the time for your cooperative to show you what we’re made of. For us to flex our technical strength, to leverage our collective knowledge, and to improve our operational efficiencies to help you through this new chapter in production agriculture. Challenge us not just to be better but to be great, not just for us, but for you. After all that is what we have always been here to do.
