Does Premium Diesel Really Improve Equipment Health?

It’s Time for a Checkup: Does Premium Diesel Really Improve Equipment Health?
It’s no secret that the world is a busy place. People are constantly on the move to get their work done, and the agriculture industry is no exception. Statistics from 2008 show that in the United States alone the off-road diesel fuel consumption for agriculture equipment was 3,833.8 million gallons of fuel. If you add those gallons of fuel with everything else that runs on diesel fuel today, you have an enormous amount of fuel consumed. The timeframe between 2006 and 2010 was a time of change for the U.S. fuel market. The parts per million of sulfur in off-road diesel fuel was lowered from 3,000 ppm to 500 ppm in June 2007 and from 500 ppm to 15 ppm in June 2010 with the goal of meeting the lower emissions standards put in place by the federal government. Why is knowing this history important? Because when the sulfur content was lowered in diesel fuel it removed the natural lubricity and cleaning characteristics that were common in diesel fuel prior to the inception of ultra-low sulfur diesel. Because of the low sulfur content in ULSD, a standard #2 diesel fuel does not offer the characteristics that protect your valuable equipment long term. Cenex® premium diesel fuel is specifically formulated to keep your equipment running year after year. With this article I want share with you the most commonly asked questions about Cenex® premium diesel fuel and why you should think about switching to a premium diesel fuel for your equipment.

What sets Cenex® premium diesel apart from a standard #2 diesel?
A premium diesel fuel offers you value and increased protection because of the additive package that is blended with the fuel. Cenex® premium diesel has a higher cetane number, better lubricity, and includes detergents that help to provide a cleaner, more efficient burn, all while protecting your engine from harmful deposits that can build up when using a #2 fuel. In fact, tests show that Cenex® premium diesel helps to prevent injector fouling and filter plugging while delivering more horsepower and greater fuel economy. Typically, tests show that Cenex® premium diesel provides a 4.5% increase in power compared to a standard #2 diesel.

Is all premium diesel fuel the same?
No, the base fuels and additives used to achieve “premium” status can vary greatly by suppliers. Cenex® premium diesel offers a quality base, soy-enhanced fuel with a complete, multifunctional additive package which is formulated for the tough demands your equipment goes through. Cenex® diesel fuel is continually researched and tested to ensure it is the highest quality premium diesel fuel on the market. This is why Cenex® can confidently offer the Total Protection Plan® diesel fuel warranty for agriculture equipment.

I’ve been using plain #2 diesel for years without a problem. Why switch now?
Over time, your engine’s fuel pump and injectors get dirty. This is a gradual, hard-to-notice process that reduces both engine performance and the fuel economy of your equipment. A standard #2 diesel fuel contains no additives to reduce wear, extend storage life or reduce the formation of gum, varnish and corrosion. This will eventually lead to a premature failure of your fuel system components and cause an increase in your maintenance expenses.

Why not just buy an over-the-counter additive for my #2 fuel?
Many over-the-counter additives simply have solvents that offer very limited benefits. Plus, they usually cost you more than a premium fuel. When you purchase Cenex® premium diesel you are getting a fuel that is blended consistently with all of the proper additives, so that you know you are protected to the very last drop.

What are the additives that are included in Cenex® premium diesel fuel? What are the benefits that it provides to me?
There are seven additives that work together to produce a variety of key benefits to keep you going all day long.
