Let our Team at CVA help your Reptile get the Best Possible Nutrition

January 14, 2019

After working with reptiles at a local county fair, I have developed an interest in reptile nutrition. Like any other living creature our reptiles require certain nutrients, so they must have a complete balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle plan. The species age and activity will determine the number of available nutrients required. Just a few examples of the reptiles I'm referring to are turtles, lizards, iguanas, and bearded dragons.

Vitamin and minerals in the diet help to prevent bone disease. We may assume a lack of calcium or an unbalanced calcium/phosphorus ratio causes soft or brittle bones, but did you realize the underlying element is vitamin D3? Vitamin D3 aids in the absorption and distribution of calcium throughout the reptiles' body. Sunlight does not travel well through a glass tank, so it is crucial to have diets with a vitamin and mineral balance.

Even a slow-moving turtle uses energy, and the more active a reptile is the more energy they use. However, remember that like people, excess energy or carbs can lead to obesity. Treats or snacks like fruit and vegetables are encouraged to reptile owners to provide variety in a diet along with a pelleted, complete feed.  The pellets used for feed are to be used as the majority of a diet so fruit should be kept under 5% and vegetables under 20%. These products from the grocery store are higher in sugar and lower in fiber so they must not be fed like in the wild.

Protein is the building block for all living organisms to form muscles, antibodies, and enzymes. Reptiles require proper amounts and combinations of amino acid chains. A lack of protein can result in a deformed turtle shell as well as the temperature at which the turtle is raised. Take time to study your reptiles' natural habitat and work to create that environment. Water is essential for all animals and not only do they need to drink water but many reptiles need water access, like a mister or an area to soak, to help with shedding and hydration.

The Mazuri brand reptile diets available to CVA are designed to meet the nutritional requirements of your pet. If you would like more information on the Mazuri Reptiles Diets, visit your local Central Valley Ag feed location and ask to speak with a specialist.
