Horse Owners Workshop coming to Oakland, NE, on July 11, 2019

July 8, 2019

Horse owners mark your calendars for July 11, 2019, for a Horse Owners Workshop at the Burt County Fairgrounds Horse Arena starting with sign in at 6:30 pm. This event is open to the public, and I encourage 4Hers to bring their horses along. The discussion will begin at 7 pm with equine nutrition requirements and Purina horse feed options. Many new horse products have been launched from Purina the past couple of years, and I would like to help owners understand what these new feeds/supplements are and why changes have been made to feeds like Strategy. There will be a weight tape exercise, and we will put together feed charts similar to the 4H level 2 horse advancement program, as I get lots of questions by those working on level 2. This will be a hands-on fun activity and give horse owners a chance to meet people in the area. Throughout the meeting, we will have drawings and prizes for those attending.

Gastric care, corn free feeds, and Amino Acid supplements are some topics that will be covered. Purina launched the new Impact line available to Purina dealers only 2 years ago, and we have had great success with the Hay stretcher, Mare and Foal, Senior, Professional Performance, and the Impact 12% feeds. Outlast, is a gastric care supplement which has been added to feeds like Strategy as research has shown a high frequency of ulcers in horses. Outlast was designed to prevent ulcers, not treat them. The amino acid supplement SuperSport helps horses recover faster, improving performance and building muscle.

Once the feed demonstration is complete, 4Hers will saddle up at 8 pm to work with myself and Cassidy Curtis on horsemanship skills, as well as a talk on fair preparation. Cassidy worked with me as a Purina/CVA intern for the last 2 summers, and I am thankful to have her back for this event. Cassidy grew up in the horse show world and carried that on to her college career where she finished her Senior year at UNL this May and competed in New York at the National IHSA show respectively placing 8th in the team open western horsemanship and was a qualifier for the AQHA high point rider class.

We will have a limited amount of each Purina horse feed on hand so please call me at 402-870-1602 ahead of time if there is a certain feed or supplement you would like to purchase. Keep in mind we also sell shavings and PMI pet food, and I would be happy to bring those products along. Cookies and drinks will be available for attendees. I hope to see you all that evening.
