WE ARE CVA | Shelby-Rising City FFA

June 6, 2018

The parking lot was completely empty, and the sun began to rise when the blue and yellow jackets started to fill the classroom. The Shelby-Rising City (Nebraska) FFA students were quickly setting up to begin practice of Parliamentary Procedure at 6:50 a.m. As the gavel hit the desk to begin, each student showed their determination to be the best. In the back of the room, you will find students judging to help prepare for competition. Once the students are done practicing their FFA Chapter Meeting begins in the same classroom.
The students in the Shelby-Rising City FFA chapter have had amazing opportunities and really value the experience. Carson Rathje, a student officer, said, “You learn a lot from meeting other people (through FFA) being that Nebraska is such a diverse place from one end to the other, so learning how their operations work and how they live their lives compared to yours is a pretty good opportunity.” Carson plans to utilize what he is learning through FFA on his own family farm in the future.

The Shelby-Rising City School District recently invested in a new agriculture building that provides students with a state of the art facility to learn about all aspects of ag. The mission of their FFA group is to help the students communicate with others about agriculture and advocate for it.

Garrett Ingalls, Shelby-Rising City FFA student officer, said that “If I didn’t have FFA I don’t think I would be where I am today. I have grown as a leader and also, know my responsibilities.”  Garret plans to use his leadership skills as an Ag educator in the future. While the Shelby-Rising City FFA chapter is only in its third year, the impact it has had on its students are unmeasurable.

The Nebraska FFA is experiencing growth across the state. Over 4,500 student members attended the annual Convention this year and participated in convention activities including sessions, workshops, a Career Fair, Leadership Academy, Interviews and Leadership Skills Events.

Central Valley Ag (CVA) participated in the Career Fair at the State Convention, where students could learn about agricultural organizations throughout the state. A booth was on display, offering students the opportunity to talk to CVA employees about what it means to be a cooperative. CVA is dedicated to FFA and strives to help out wherever needed through facility tours, classroom education, and fundraising.
The Nebraska FFA is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. Carson Rathje, Student Officer, said it best, “(FFA) gives you a real outlook on what you can do in life and still be a part of agriculture.”
