CVA Employees Run into Fitness

May 11, 2018

Thanks in part to a wellness initiative within the cooperative, Central Valley Ag (CVA) had 10 employees participate in the 13.1-mile race, and one employee participate in the 26.2-mile race as part of The Lincoln Marathon event on May 6 in Lincoln, Neb.

“CVA cares about their employees, and about their wellness,” said Tim Esser, SVP of Human Resources. “We encourage an active lifestyle to help combat the rising costs of healthcare, and to create healthier and happier employees.”

CVA employees Nathan Hake, Paula Newlin, Janet Hesting, Jerad Monzon, Rick Croisant, Bethany Gilley, Diane Connelly, Lindsey Sabatka, Colby Vesely and Mallory Wittstruck completed the half marathon. Ashley Fleming completed the full marathon.

Croisant, a Customer Service Specialist in Beloit, Kan., participated in his first half marathon within the wheelchair division. “I wanted a goal to work towards and to prove to myself I could do it,” said Croisant. He was paralyzed from the waist down, three and a half years ago during a tree cutting accident.

“The race was really tough, but I’m glad I did it.” Croisant also mentioned his two kids plan to run with him next year. He placed third in his division this year.

Newlin, a Recruiter also based in Beloit, had never considered running a half marathon, but with CVA’s promotion and support of the event it was just enough to push her into signing up.

“CVA’s dedication and willingness to participate in their employees’ health really encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and be a positive example for CVA,” said Newlin.  She accomplished her goal of completing the race under three hours.

“I will continue to run this race as long as I am able. Diane from Stromsburg has inspired me to run it at least 20 times,” said Vesely, a Recruiter based in York, Neb. This race was Vesely’s fifth half marathon.

Connelly, a Customer Service Specialist, completed her 25th Lincoln Half Marathon and proudly displays many of those medals in her office at the Stromsburg, Neb. CVA facility.

Several employees were encouraged by the amount of support from strangers along the route, cheering “way to go CVA, keep it up!”

“One guy high fived me and said ‘yes, CVA. I love it.’ No clue on who it was, but he really seemed to like seeing CVA participating,” said Newlin.
“It was great to see all of us come together from both Kansas and Nebraska,” said Wittstruck, Marketing Manager based in Beloit. “We couldn’t all train together, but on race day we were one team. The camaraderie developed will go beyond race day.
